Christmas gifting for kids can get a little overwhelming. The lists can get out of hand, it can become a stress of decision making and can fast get into an expensive, unnecessary pressure at this time of the year. So here’s a great way to simplify it…
For Christmas every year as kids we would receive something we wanted, needed, something to wear and something to read… and some treats to snack on while we waited for dad to come home from the milking shed!! I follow the same mantra every year – helpful when buying for three kids but also teaching them that less is more.
So I thought I’d share some of my favourite local, NZ businesses who provide us with beautiful, great quality products which fit with the Want, Need, Wear, Read concept. Here are some of my faves….made right here in NZ…..
I’m going to go ahead and skip straight to a ‘Need’ since every family needs a height chart that they can treasure forever, and because we proudly make them! But not any height chart – you’re keeping it forever, so it is essential that it’s made well, is of excellent quality and has a timeless design.
These talented makers hand make some seriously fun toys – definitely something to inspire every child’s imagination.
While these beautiful fairy and elf doors aren’t hand made in NZ, mum Kirsty has been bringing magic to kids play in NZ for many years now and her products are made to last.
Beautifully curved wooden boards for kids to have hours of fun playing on, hand made in the Hawkes Bay.
While I’m in love with Raewyn’s art prints, she also prints her beautiful collection onto flash cards. They are perfect to hang on walls, or use as flash cards.
Cruelty free. No silicones, PEGs, petrochemicals, parabens, artificial colours or harsh surfactants and best of all, made in New Zealand. These super fun, colourfully designed shampoo, conditioner, detangler and body wash are a great idea for the Santa sack, and smell delicious too!
Catherine is a NZ mum of two who understands exactly what kids need and want. While her beautiful products aren’t made in NZ, she designs all of her amazing products and works hard to bring them to NZ families. Burrow and Be’s collection of gems could fall under Want, Need and Wear!
These guys are a small, ethical, family-owned and operated company, based in the Wairarapa, producing New Zealand made cheeky goodness for your bum from certified fair trade organic cotton. Undies for Christmas – always a need!
Perriam is a family business centred around a Central Otago high-country merino farm, Bendigo Station. They design timeless New Zealand-made merino knitwear, clothing and homewares for the modern lifestyle that stand the test of time and become staple wardrobe classics.
Kat Merewether’s bestselling and award-winning Kuwi the Kiwi series of books are a must have. She has quite the collection now. One of our faves is Kiwicorn. We have a couple of her beautiful books ear marked for this year including her new book Kuwi & Friends Maori Picture Dictionary.
So this year, say goodbye to a stressful Christmas shop, meaningless presents and outlandish expectations from your kids. This less is more concept is a great way to teach appreciation. If they’re old enough, ask them to write one thing under each concept and force them to thinking about what they really want/need. In a world where environmental impact is so important, where single use is just not cool anymore and kids are fast becoming…..I mean, needing a little more perspective! Bring the meaning of Christmas back to having fun with friends and family.
